Gendered Baby

“He’s so handsome!” “What’s his name?” “How old is your little guy?”

People are constantly assuming that Avery is a boy. Yesterday alone FOUR separate people called her a boy. I don’t mind that people can’t tell she’s a girl (because babies aren’t naturally gendered and they aren’t looking under her diaper), but I mind the assumption. I mind people thinking they can assign a gender to my baby based on the blue sweater she’s wearing, or the brown leather shoes, or the grey pants, or whatever clothing item in ANY COLOUR OTHER THAN PINK.

  1. Ugh, I know the feeling. Everyone always thought J was a boy when she was smaller – and still do, sometimes/often. It doesn’t bother me that they are misgendering her, but it does bother me that they think that anyone not dressed all in pink and glitter is a boy. I think I am actually more irked when she is wearing clothes coded as ‘girl’ clothes and people do the whole “what a pretty girl you are” thing…
